WW: Actually Thursday

This was supposed to post yesterday, but I messed up the scheduled timing so... it gets posted today?

Yesterday was the 5 year anniversary of Grady being euthanized. I still miss him so much, he was just so special. It was especially a sad day just because I always envisioned him raising my first baby horse for me. He was going to be the perfect baby sitter. The horse that my foal would learn to pony off of, have for company during weaning, and show the ropes of life.

So it seems extra sad that yesterday I was thinking of him and playing with my first baby horse. Wishing that he was here extra hard.

Four Years

Yesterday was the four year anniversary that I lost Grady, my first horse, and the absolute love of my life. I can't believe it's already been four years already, it doesn't feel like it's been that long and I still miss him like it was yesterday. He was certainly the greatest horse I have ever owned and likely will ever own.

Sorry for the downer post, but it popped up on my Facebook and made me really sad. I've been thinking about him a lot lately and that Facebook memory confirmed why.

In happier news, I've made it to the barn three days in a row which is a minor miracle. And not only did I go three days in a row, but I rode two of them! You know I haven't ridden in a long time when I was sore after the first ride...

Proof I actually sat on my horse!

Jetta was pretty bracey and strong on Tuesday. She was getting pretty frustrating, but we added a bunch of walk-trot-walk transitions and some serpentines in and she started getting softer and lighter in the front end so we ended the ride on a good note.

Today was much better. I went at the worst possible time when almost every single person at the barn who actually rides was there. Two people riding, one person leading their horse in the arena, another who was just finishing her rides and then me lunging. Plus feeding time. A little bit of a mad house. Jetta was actually very good. She is notoriously spooky when it's feeding time with the BM throwing food down from the loft, to the point that the BM sometimes goes and does something else if I'm riding when she goes to feed. But Jetta held it together super well. I lunged her really quick since we were cramped for space and I wanted to get on as quickly as possible without running anyone over.

She was much lighter and much less braced. We did a lot of shoulders-in and I tried my hardest to push her forward whenever she got braced, as hard as that is for me. You'd think I'd been riding this horse for 7 years, I would have figured out how to ride her forward even with out hot she is, but it's still hard!

Hopefully the good streak will continue! The weather has been crazy - we got almost 3 inches of snow at my house on Monday morning. It quickly melted luckily and now it's just been raining non-stop, which looks like the forecast for the next couple of weeks. I wish it would be dry enough for a trail ride!

No more snow please. Thanks.

30 Day Challenge - Your First Show

Since I have nothing better to do, a new (to me) 30 Day Challenge!

I did a post about this exact topic a while ago. I can't really remember this show all that well. All I remember is that I didn't really have a clue about what I was doing and I was super bummed when we didn't win, lol. I did win a second place ribbon in one of my classes though! Makes me miss Grady a whole lot...

And look at those lovely brown Wranglers! Lol

I think this was my first show. I was involved in 4-H and taking lessons, but I don't think I had competed in anything yet. I remember looking at my trainer standing against the wall and asking her what to do with my hands because everyone was in a curb bit with one hand and here I was showing western with a snaffle!

One Year

Can't believe it's been a whole year. I thought I would be able to write a whole new post about him, but I don't know what else I can say about him other than what I've already written.

I still look for him in the pasture when I drive past it. I miss his little orange spotted pricked ears. I miss how he used to whinny at me when I drove the truck past or how he would always come when I whistled. I still think about going out to the barn to cuddle with him when I've had a rough day. He had put up with my middle school and high school angst enough times that he would stand there forever while I clung to him.

I always thought he'd be there forever for me. He will always be my handsome old man.

I was taking a writing class this time last year. One of our assignments was to write a short story about our favorite room in our house where we grew up. I don't have a favorite room persay, but I do have a favorite place on our property: the barn. I wrote this little story a couple weeks before Grady passed away. I am not a good writer by any means. If you're a regular reader of this blog you probably know that. But I still love this little piece:

Dust motes glimmered in the golden sunlight that diffused through the frosted windows as she finished sweeping the concrete floor.  A copper colored horse, shiny from grooming, munched contentedly on his dinner in his stall. The hay was stacked neatly along the far wall, providing the perfect platform for curling up with the barn cat and a good book or a jumping off point for using the old, frayed rope that dangled from the ceiling as a swing. The hay’s sweet smell pervaded the small space, mingling with the smell of dust and horses. A saddle sat along one wall, taking the position of a prized possession. Its leather was worn and cracked but it gleamed with oil and the best care that a young girl could offer.
She remembered all of this as she inhaled the scent of her horse, remembering a simpler time when she was young and the barn was her favorite place. It still was her favorite place, somewhere she could escape from the daily stress of her life, her family, bills and college; a place where she could spend her time without the feeling of everything weighing down on her. She still wished for those simpler times when she could spend hours in the barn doing nothing, running away from her petty problems – the latest test that she didn’t do well on or the friends that didn’t stick around. The barn housed her best friend, the one individual that would always listen to her problems, gave her a shoulder to lean on and ultimately would always be there for her.
She couldn’t imagine growing up without horses. They were the ones who taught her to work hard, to listen to what couldn’t be said in words, that there were some things that you couldn’t use shortcuts to get to, that love was unconditional. Sure there were falls and many bruises, but they helped her to remain humble when she got too confident and reminded her that you could never learn all that there was.
That copper horse was still around. He was retired now and lived in a pasture, doing nothing but graze to his heart’s content. She owed him that much for all that he had given to her over the years; a safe and comfortable place to live out his days. He was no longer quite so shiny, he had plenty more white hairs in his coat and his back had dipped down and lost its strength. But he still nickered and trotted to her when she came to visit, still stood quietly when she buried her nose in his coat and inhaled, still listened to all of her problems. They no longer galloped across the field but they both still remembered the time they flew across the ground with nothing between them – no halter or bridle, no bit or rope – simply trust. And occasionally he would kick up his heels and canter stiffly around with his neck arched and his tail streaming in the wind and she would smile. He still looked the part despite his age, her red Arabian stallion, disguised as a small copper gelding.

Review: Cricket & Blue Custom Horsehair Bracelet

I can't tell you how excited I was to receive this bracelet! It took me a long time to send in Grady's hair. I kept all of his tail hair, specifically so that I could get a bracelet or two made. My mom eventually convinced me that it was time, as she wanted to get me this bracelet as a birthday present!

I've seen several reviews of Cricket & Blue's bracelets and I loved how nice they looked. Classy, high quality and well made. I ended up deciding on getting a bracelet made with multiple horse's hair since I wanted something that was different. I had some of Jazz's and Tux's hair as well so I emailed Rachel and asked if a tri-color bracelet in sort of a spiral-y pattern was possible and she said yes!

First picture I saw of my hair when she got it!

I got the hair all cleaned up and sent it in. I got a little enthusiastic about the amount I sent in just because I wanted to make sure there was plenty.

It was nice that I follow Cricket & Blue on Instagram and like them on Facebook because then I got to stalk all the pictures and find the ones of my hair.

In progress: Mine's on the right!

I decided on a Passion bracelet in silver. I'm definitely more of a silver than a gold kind of person! Originally I was going to go with a Passage bracelet, but then ultimately decided on Passion bracelet because even though I liked the idea of a chunkier bracelet, I liked the hardware better on the Passion.

In the mail!!

I haven't been so excited for a package in a long time. I checked the mail several times every day (our mail always comes at random times). I checked it for the second time on Monday just in case before I left for class. I happily tore into the packaging, barely pausing to take this picture:

Cute little bag it came in

And found my bracelet and a nice little note from Rachel as well. I immediately put the bracelet on to make sure it fit (phew, it did. I have the tiniest wrists so it just looked so little I was worried I asked for the wrong size!). I was then so excited that when I left the house, I locked my keys inside and had to finagle my way back inside to get them before heading off to class without being late. Hey, I was really excited.

Perfection

I don't normally wear bracelets, except for my leather nameplate one. I used it as a template for what size to order. I think if I had ordered maybe half an inch larger it would have been an even better size just because of the style of bracelet it it, I'd want it a little more "floppy" on my wrist, but as it is, it's still perfect. I love wearing it with my nameplate bracelet because then I have all four of my favorite horses on my wrist!

Overall, I couldn't be happier with my bracelet. It looks gorgeous, the braid is very tight with no loose hairs, and it makes me so happy to have a piece of all my favorite horses with me, most especially Grady. I'm already considering my next bracelet, perhaps with just his hair... Or maybe even a pair of horsehair knot earrings! I would highly recommend going with Cricket & Blue for a bracelet. She responded quickly to my emails, it was great to see updates of my bracelet in progress and the end product is wonderful.

Two Months

Today it has been exactly two months since I put Grady down. I can't believe it's been that long.

I can't believe how much I miss him. I still think about him every day now. It's still hard.

Found some of my senior pics from high school and this was one of my favorites with him. I wish I had more pictures of the two of us together.

Just What I Needed

Just what I needed - a great, distracting weekend to keep my mind occupied!

It's still really rough thinking about Grady. I knew it would be hard having him gone, but it's random things that make me upset, like opening my ebay watch list and finding a blanket I was thinking of getting him, or finding a to do list with "Groom Grady" on it. And the pasture is so empty... I keep expecting him to walk into his stall or whinny at me. I created a page at the top of this blog for him, just in case you're interested. I still have a few pics I want to find and scan to add to that page.

My friend AR and I made plans to go ride at the beach since the weather was supposed to be nice and boy was it gorgeous! It was a lot of fun, I really needed that.

We have a cool shadow :)

Jetta behaved pretty much exactly like I expected her to. Her attitude as we started out was pretty much, "heck no, I didn't sign up for this!". She spooked at everything. She spooked at the grass, she spooked at the puddles, she spooked at the different colored sand, she spooked at the hikers, she spooked at the driftwood, she spooked at the waves. Geez horse. But she's this way in the spring every year since she's shut inside pretty much all winter. And after some impressive maneuvers in wave avoidance (her technique - frog leap the waves so that your legs go in five different directions at once, nearly unseating your rider, or if that isn't satisfactory, spin and bolt), eventually she got over it and we had a really great ride.

Having a good gallop is a cure for everything!

The Hardest Thing

The hardest thing to do is to let someone you love go.

I haven't had to deal with that a whole lot in my life, so having to put down a horse is just so devastating.

Grady has always been my best friend, the best horse a little girl could ask for and my first love.

This morning I got a text from my dad while I was in class saying there was an emergency and I needed to call him. Knowing my dad, it's really important if he calls it an emergency. I stepped out of class to talk to him and as soon as he spoke I knew something was wrong. Grady wasn't doing well and they had the vet out. My heart just broke right then. I gathered up my things from class and left, already crying (poor teacher, he looked kind of speechless when I told him I had to go).

It was the longest hour of my life trying to get home as quickly as possible. I was so worried that they'd put him down without me being there. That's something I've always worried about, especially when I'm traveling. When I got there the vet had sedated him - given him a ton of morphine and banamine. He colicked this morning and twisted his gut badly. He ended up getting his back feet stuck in the fencing when he rolled too close.

I'm so lucky to have such an amazing community. The neighbors called my parents when they saw him rolling then three other neighbors stopped to get him out of the fence. One person pulled the fence post out of the ground, another cut the wire away while my neighbor LC sent my brother to the barn to get a halter and calmed Grady. I'm so glad they all stopped to help.

The vet said there pretty much wasn't anything he could do. He had tubed Grady a couple hours before but there pretty much were no gut sounds still. He palpated him rectally but could hardly get his hand up very far because of the twist. Grady was feeling a little better when I got there from the morphine, he nickered and nuzzled my face when I got there. But he had a hard time standing, his muscles were shaking and he was obviously still uncomfortable.

Hardest decision of my life. I spent over an hour with him, just petting him and loving on him. It was a beautiful day out today, not a bad day to die I guess, all things considered. The vet finally came back an hour and a half later and I decided it was time to put him down. The longer I waited the harder it would get and I didn't want him to hurt any more.

He would have been 27 this year. I always thought he would live until he was 30 years old. It was something my trainer who helped me buy and retrain him always said: that he's the kind of horse that I'll be riding until he was 30. I had so many things I was looking forward to with him. He was just starting to shed out and I always get excited when that happens - he goes from fuzzy teddy bear to sleek stallion. I was going to have a professional photographer come take some pictures of us together this summer since I don't have too many of me and him together. My parents were planning on turning the old vineyard area into his new pasture and had just planted some orchardgrass. I always thought he'd be around when I finally got around to breeding Jetta, that he'd be the foal's buddy when it was time for weaning, that he'd help me start my next project horse this summer, he was always the best horse to use for ponying.

I'm just going to miss him so much. Even just today, walking down to the barn to get a saddle I expected to see him pop his head over the fence. He was my baby, my handsome old man.

Good Rides

Finally got to ride Jetta for two days in a row! She was pretty good. On Thursday she was just what I needed after a stressful week. She had been inside because the pastures are pretty soupy because of the snow/rain combination we got. First we had to get the baby out of the arena. She was supposed to be outside but I guess there was a loss of communication somewhere and she was in the arena. Then I saw a llama wandering around outside so I called the BO and she came and put the baby away and wrangled the silly llama.

Making friends with the shy baby.

Jetta was SO hyper. Not saying I like it when she's wired, but it's so entertaining to watch her goof off and be silly, having fun. I went to lunge her and she was pogo-ing around me. I ended up taking off her saddle and unclipping the lunge line so she could just go gallop off some steam. She's such a dork - when she gets going that fast when she's trotting like a pogo stick she is going so fast with zero balance so she occasionally slips and falls. Then gets to her feet and gallops off again like nothing ever happened. Hence why I pulled off her saddle.

Trying out the new saddle pad we got at the tack sale. It's the kind with the fleece underneath. I like it!

Deceptively calm in the cross ties...

When I rode, I used the hackamore and just toodled around without worrying about collecting or anything, though she wasn't allowed to go all llama on me though. She was really good and it was nice to finally ride again.

Jetta was in again on Friday so we free lunged again and then I rode the same as yesterday though with a tad bit more collection. Jetta started off kind of ticked that I was asking her to actually work, at one point she reared up. Bad pony. But she worked through it and it ended up being a really good ride too. I finished off by rewarding her by playing with the bouncy ball. I still can't get over how adorable it is when she rolls it around with her nose!

Then I headed home for the next week for Spring Break - the weather was gorgeous out (our one day I'm sure!) so when I got home of course I immediately went to go play with the boys. I met them in the field and got started on grooming Grady since he's been losing so much hair. He still looks like a yak or a fluffy teddy bear but it's getting better :) Can't wait til he's all sleek again!

Ridiculous amount of hair... That's just some of what I groomed off!

Then because I couldn't resist I hopped on Grady for a jaunt around the pasture. I love my old man, he remembers everything I've taught him even though I haven't ridden him in months. He's just so comfortable, homey almost, you know? We even had a nice canter, not creaky in the slightest.

Cutest face, even in Colton's ugly halter (that came with him).
My favorite ears.
Some remaining snow.

Valentine-Schmalentine

I'm not a fan of Valentine's day (aka SAD - Singleness Awareness Day). Doesn't really lend itself to being a good day for those who are single.

Anyways, luckily I have great parents and great roommates. My parents sent me this gorgeous bouquet...of fruit!!

Yum! I love my parents :)

But really, this post is for my equine valentine. Grady. I'm lucky to have such a sweet, handsome guy in my life, even if he does have four legs and communicates in nickers. Here are some of my more recent pictures of him:

I love this boy so much and I can't believe he'll be 26 years old this year!
