The Many Reasons I Love my Farrier

  • ·       She does what’s best for the horse
She’s not concerned with what’s pretty or trying to make the hoof conform to an “ideal”. She’s more than happy to change what she’s doing depending on feedback from the horse. Her goal is a comfortable horse, regardless of what that looks like for that specific horse. Jetta is one of those weird horses – she gets sore every time her bars are trimmed. So we don’t trim her bars and she’s happy and sound. She has a slight medial flare on her hind feet. But she needs that or she would have very unbalanced feet with all the weight-bearing falling laterally. She travels well and is comfortable with what AC does.

  • ·       She drives an hour+ to come do my horses.

She says she’s semi-retired and just trimming part time now. “Only the people I like”.  She has a kid and lots of her own animals to take care of at home, but she makes the time to make a long drive up to see my girls. I had a moment of panic when she said her plan is to retire in three years, though I doubt I’ll be living in the same area once I get out of vet school. I’ll miss her!

  • ·       She is just a plain good person, the kind that gives you faith in humanity

She doesn’t charge me for trimming baby. She says that because baby horses can change so rapidly, she trims them for free for their first year of life because she never wants someone not to call her to trim due to money. Some babies can need trims every 4 weeks to help prevent or reduce angular limb deformities.

When I got Jetta as a 2-year old she used to come out 2 or 3 times a week and just trim one hoof at a time and helped me work through her many hoof- and behavior-related issues. Jetta used to try to kick her in the head or lay down while trimming and since she considered her a rescue horse, she didn’t charge me those first couple months and she was always good with handling Jetta.

When I was looking for a farrier before AC I had a lady out and she smacked my horse Jazz (the NICEST most polite horse ever) with her rasp and I definitely didn’t have her out again. AC also rescues animals and retires horses to her little farm just to give them a good life.

Adorable little baby feet

  • ·       She’s just so dang nice

There was another farrier at my barn doing shoes while she was trimming Jetta. He was REALLY rude but she just took it in stride. He stopped what he was doing to come watch her trim and kept asking her questions about “why wasn’t she doing this” or “what about that, are you just leaving that”. Then he ridiculed her for how little she charges for trimming. But AC was just her normal polite self. Jetta has always been happy barefoot and I have no complaints about how she does her feet. She grows them like she does for a reason and we’ve fixed a lot of problems barefoot – she had ridiculous quarter cracks on her hind feet, recurring abscesses, etc. I make no secret of the fact that I believe horses will have less problems and have healthier feet long term staying barefoot. I won’t ridicule people for choosing the convenience of shoes, but it’s insane the amount of ridicule I receive for having a happy barefoot horse.

AC also brought me fresh eggs “because I know you’re a college student and you need healthy food”. Have I mentioned I love this woman?

Run Away!

I went to buy Jetta her birthday carrots and for whatever reason they only had baby carrots, no big bags of full sized carrots. So I decided to treat her and bought her some organic carrots that still had the tops attached. I thought she'd love them! She's never gotten carrots like these, but I couldn't see why she wouldn't be excited about them.

This was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. Jetta was straight up scared of the carrots. The first carrot she ate, she had the tops hanging out of her mouth and she was spooking at them, but she wouldn't let go of them. I was dying, I almost slipped and fell in the mud I was laughing so hard.

I just thought this was too funny not to share on multiple platforms. My horse is such a dork...

12 Years

I am a bad pony mom and I missed Jetta's birthday! For some reason I thought it was on the 15th, but it's actually the 5th of April. Based on last year's post this seems to be a running theme for me. Oops, sorry Jetta!

I did this last year, sharing my 12 favorite pictures of Jetta (last year was 11). Unfortunately, I don't have a whole lot of new pictures that are really that good! I think I really need to get some new ones asap.

My two loves

This one will always be my favorite - I will repost it forever!

One of my favorite memories - our first recognized HT

She's just adorable
Those whiskers <3

I obviously just really love that cute little schnozz

I need to print and frame this one!

We ended up celebrating her birthday on the 6th and she got a big bag of carrots and lots of extra cookies. Here's to many more years of my monster pony!

Baby's First Field Trip

We went on our first field trip yesterday and no one died!

The truck's antifreeze situation got fixed and I got out of class early and the BF agreed to go with us to lend a hand just to make sure everything went smoothly... Basically the stars aligned!

There was lots going on at the house. The landlord is repairing the deck with loud powertools, all the roommates were home, big trucks were driving past and Maisie was on high alert and she couldn't figure out whether to spook or not but there were too many things to spook at. But she loaded up well and the drive to the barn was uneventful.

So cute

At the barn she was still on high alert and was quite talkative. I took her into the arena and let her explore for a while. She whinnied quite a bit, but wasn't too scared of anything. She nosed all the traffic cones, chairs, and knocked over some jump blocks. After exploring inside for a while we walked around outside, said hi to a tractor and another boarder. I was worried she wouldn't want to load up again but she hopped right back into the trailer with no issue.

Cute little trot

Somehow by the time she got home she had somehow gotten slack in her lead rope and wrapped it around her neck, but luckily didn't strangle herself. She seems well behaved enough that we can use the trailer tie instead of the blocker tie ring next time so that won't be an issue.

Overall, it was very successful! She was spooky and high strung, but despite that she listened well and was a good baby. She was definitely reaching the end of her rope when we got home and tried to take cute pictures, but that's understandable since she's only 8 months. I cannot wait for this summer to go on more field trips and learn how to pony!!

Living the Baby Horse Life

Baby horse has mostly been living the life, just hanging out in the pasture. But we've been working on some basic life skills on occasion.

Tying champion

Whenever I clean the barn she gets to be tied and learn about standing. We have worked a little bit on cross tying, which she definitely was not sure about. I haven't actually tied her yet, just run the lead ropes through her halter/the cross tie rings to get her used to use to how it looked/felt. She was quite unsure and kept eyeballing the lead ropes, but we ended on a good note with her snoozing, though I wasn't able to walk away quite yet.

Not really sure what's going on

She also has gotten her vaccinations (complete with booster) and is up to date on her worming. She was initially pretty offended about getting poked with a needle, but didn't give me too much trouble. She's a champion about being dewormed which I really appreciate!

SO FLUFFY

Other than that, I'm hoping to haul her to the barn that Jetta's at one evening for a field trip. I was going to do it last week, being spring break and all, but when I hooked up my truck and trailer, the truck started leaking a large amount of antifreeze so the BF worked on it this weekend and hopefully it'll be as good as new soon!

Trying on her big girl halter... she's too big for yearling size, but still too small for horse size!

Maisie hasn't hauled alone yet, but we've practiced loading and she doesn't hesitate. She is not a fan of me tying her and threw a bit of a tantrum, but we worked through it and she ended up being (sullenly) ok in the trailer. Hopefully she'll be quiet to haul!

And lastly, she got her first acupuncture session on Friday. My friend PR just got certified so she came out and tried a few points. No results yet (in terms of cribbing) though I have definitely never seen Maisie that relaxed! Her lower lip was droopy and she was having a hard time keeping her eyes open. But maybe we'll try a couple more sessions and see how it goes.

Model status

Most excitingly... She jumped an almost 5 foot fence about a week ago. This is the second time in her 8 months of life that she has jumped a large pasture fence. I am not amused. She better grow up to be a great jumper! I think what happened is that she was turned out with Kestrel, my roommate's 3 year old Appy mare. Kestrel is very submissive towards the roommate's other horse, hence why we turned her out with Maisie. Unfortunately, Kestrel quickly figured out how easy Maisie is to boss around, resulting in Kestrel chasing, cornering and trying to double barrel Maisie. So they lost their turn out privileges together which is a huge bummer. Luckily Maisie only ended up with a small scrape on her right knee and stifle which I cleaned and examined. I was worried she had a puncture wound, but it's really just a scratch on her knee.

Naughty babies

So that is the exciting life of a baby horse! I can't wait to take her on her field trip next week, so I will keep you updated on what happens!

Welp, Nevermind

Welllll... we didn't make it into the show yesterday. Apparently they had a TON of entries for the show, so I didn't make the cut. I was extremely bummed since I was getting really excited for it, but I think it's for the better. I get to save my money and wait for a league show so I get points. And I got to focus on finals instead of stressing about the show too and everything I needed to do to get ready (clean tack, organize trailer, bathe Jetta, etc.)

Our last two rides were WONDERFUL and then we had two awful ones. After two relaxed rides with lots of stretchy trots, I wanted to work on lateral work again. Jetta warmed up really nicely, then went downhill once we started the lateral work. She just gets more and more amped and then I get a shorter rein and she gets more and more "up"and it snowballs.

When we went to canter she launched into it with barely a cue, she was being super sensitive to my aids, so I tried to school it a little bit and she just got more anxious. We ended up dropping back to the trot and doing lots of figure 8's and serpentines, trying to get her listening, not heavy, not overreacting to my leg, etc.

It ended up being a pretty long ride and while I think we did accomplish things, it was frustrating. So probably another reason that it's good we didn't make it into the show.

Then I rode on Sunday and they were scraping the driveway, trying to get rid of some of the potholes and while Jetta doesn't actually care, when we got into the arena and couldn't see the tractor she was VERY CONCERNED and there was much prancing and general obnoxiousness so I got off and lunged her and she ran until she decided she was done and then we had a lovely but short ride.

Now it looks like our first show will either be mid-April with an indoor eventing show (just jumping, no dressage) or a dressage league show at the end of April. We will see! I'd like to know my exam schedule before signing up, but I also don't want to miss out again by entering at the last minute. So we'll see.

Here's our updated list of things we need to work on:

Training Level
Canter - reasonable speed, not on forehand, on the bit
Better, but we need to work on not launching into the canter
Canter-trot transition
           Better, but still needs improvement
Stretchy trot circle
           Much better!

First Level
Fine-tune our leg yield
         It's going really well!
Lengthened trot and canter
We've been working a little on the lengthened trot, but haven't touched the canter yet

Second Level
Travers - working on this, it's still ugly but has its good moments
Canter-walk transition - HA. hahahaha
Canter loop/counter canter - started our canter loops and they are not as bad as I was expecting
Sitting trot - sometimes we can do this other times we are too discombobulated

To apologize for the lack of photos, I'll be posting a baby update soon! I promise that one will have photos :)
